OTTAWA — Sen. Pat Apple said he supports extending a special state phone tax for enhanced 911 service that takes emergency calls from cell phones. The tax is scheduled to end next year but said enhanced 911 services need an improvement so they can receive text messages. During the shootings at Virginia Tech, students send hundreds of text messages, he said. Legislators will have hearings on the tax this summer, Apple said.
