APPANOOSE — Appanoose School is one of five schools across the state that will receive a wind turbine from the Kansas Wind for Schools program. Besides providing some electricity the turbine will provide some lessons for students, said Appanoose principal Cathy Brandt. Lessons involving the turbine will expose students to the coming wind industry and prepare them for jobs that may not even have names yet, she said. Brandt said the wind turbine will be installed next spring. The turbine will generate about $300 to $400 of electricity per year, said Dan Nagengast, director of the Wind for schools program and the Kansas Rural Center. The program is designed to raise awareness about renewable energy and provide hands-on science lessons for students, he said.
