COLONY — The Colony Public Library has attracted several visitors in recent months to read a series of unique books bought with funds from the memorial of Colony native Alice Ward. Ward died in January and was a former member of the Colony Library Board and volunteered at the library. Ward’s family suggested that the library buy the Foxfire books. The Foxfire books started as a high school English project in southern Appalachia. The series of eleven books tells about Appalachian culture including how to build a log cabin, make soap, weaving baskets or rugs, snake lore, faith healing and even how to make moonshine. The Foxfire books have been popular since the first book in the series was printed in the 1970s. Donna Westerman, Colony, told the Anderson County Review that she likes the books and that they have given her some good household tips that she’s used many times.
