OTTAWA — One hundred-fifty years later, there’s still plenty to debate over who was right during the period of Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War. Starting Freedom’s Frontier Historical Heritage Area has been a learning experience for both Kansans and Missourians, said Deb Barker, Franklin County Historical Society’s executive director. The two different views to the same historic events – two different views that still exist – will be part of the attraction for history tourists, she said. A management plan for the heritage area is due to be completed in the next few weeks. Once the plan is done, the area will pick up federal funding and advice as well as more tourists interested in history, she said. The Freedom’s Frontier area includes 29 counties in eastern Kansas and 12 counties in western Missouri.
