OTTAWA — Every man gets his day in court. And another day. And another day.
So many days that Franklin County Attorney Heather Jones says the court system is being overwhelmed by the number of jury trials coming up this summer. During this week’s budget hearings, jones told county commissioners that Judge Thomas Sachse has asked other judges in the district for help with the 25 trials expected through October. Many of the cases are major cases, she said. Because of the number of cases, Jones said her office makes 12,000 to 15,000 copies of documents each month. Jones says her office is working out a way to send documents electronically to defense attorneys to cut paperwork and postage costs. Jones said because of the economy, she says she expects crime and her workload to increase.
