SCRANTON — A 24-year-old Burlingame woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident near Scranton this morning. Jennifer Beck was killed and 31-year-old Daniel Mellies, 31, Overbrook, was injured when the pickup he was driving struck an embankment head-on. The Kansas Highway Patrol said that Mellies’ pickup was going south on Scranton Road when it went through a T-intersection at 189th Street, which didn’t have a stop sign, and hit the embankment shortly after midnight. The accident occurred two-and-a-half miles west of U.S. 75. Troopers said neither were wearing safety restraints. Mellies was taken to St. Francis Health Center, Topeka. His condition wasn’t immediately known.
