GARNETT — The city of Garnett is sending city employees and equipment to help the crippled city of Colony. Colony was hit by a powerful thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon that damaged buildings, downed power lines that left the city without electricity and uprooted trees and scattered limbs that blocked several city streets. Garnett city manager Joyce Martin said her city will provide workers, trucks and a loader and any other equipment that Colony needs to clean up and open up its streets. Martin said that according to reports she received, the storm packed winds of 60 miles an hour that caused severe damage to buildings and trees. Although Colony is serviced by the private utility Westar, Martin said Garnett is also willing to send city electrical crews and equipment to help restore power. Several county roads in the colony area are blocked because of flash-flooding and downed trees, she said. Garnett will also offer to help the county re-open those roads.
