COLONY — One Colony family has a rule they always follow. They wear bicycle helmets as they bike around Anderson County. Richard and Heather Webber and their children, 11-year-old Emily and 8-year-old Ian, ride their bikes at least once every two days and usually bicycle at least two miles each trip. Richard Webber said he rode his bike 10 miles every night while he was in high school. Since he completed the Bike Across Kansas in 2005, the family has been bicycling big-time since. The Webbers said they wear the helmets to be a good role model for their children. According to statistics, most bicycling deaths result from brain injuries. Nearly 88 percent of bicycle brain injuries could be prevented by the use of a helmet. Garnett doctor Mackenzie Peterson said that bicycle injuries peak during the summer. She says that having helmets and a well-maintained and well-adjusted bicycle will prevent most injuries.
