GARNETT — Garnett city officials say they’ll see if they can create their own Neighborhood Revitalization program for Garnett. Earlier, the Anderson County Commission voted to end the Neighborhood Revitalization program. However, city commissioners voiced unanimous support for the program. Neighborhood Revitalization offers property tax rebates for new commercial or residential construction or major improvements in certain areas of Garnett and Greeley. The program was a joint effort among the cities, the county and Unified School District 365. Without the county’s OK, the program ends next Tuesday. County commissioners say the program wasn’t well used and that the county can’t afford to forgo the nearly $23,000 in new tax revenues they lost from the program. Garnett city manager Joyce Martin said she’ll talk to the county commission. However, Martin also proposes to create a new program in cooperation with the school district in which qualifying property owners would receive tax rebates from the city and school district.
