OTTAWA — County planner Larry Walrod said Wednesday the state is cutting back the tap on state grants to protect local water. The county has been receiving the state grants for 13 years to protect the Marais des Cygnes River watershed, he said. The county had been receiving $14,000 but will be cut 28 percent to less than $10,000 next year, Walrod said. Walrod took the cut philosophically, saying that it’s still $10,000 more than the county would otherwise receive. He said he’ll try to minimize the effect of the cuts. Franklin County commissioners agreed Wednesday to apply for the grant.
