PAOLA — A Paola man is the first Democrat to file for governor. 42-year-old Herbert West III conceded he’s a long-shot and has no campaign money. Among his campaign issues, he said says he’s skeptical of a deal that allows a coal-fired power plant in Holcomb and the plan to locate the national animal disease lab at Manhattan. He said he’ll ask pawnshops for donated TVs and stereos to auction off for campaign funds. Kansas Democratic Party officials aren’t happy with his candidacy and told the Topeka Capital-Journal they didn’t think West properly represents the party. Last year, West challenged Miami County Sheriff Frank Kelley and issued several personal charges against Kelley and his son during the campaign. The only other candidate for governor is U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, a Republican.
