GARNETT — Two Garnett sites have been nominated for the Kansas Sampler Foundation’s 8 Wonders of Kansas Customs. Bicycling and walking the Prairie Spirit Trail is one of the customs. The 51-mile trail, which follows an old Santa Fe railroad, goes from Ottawa through Garnett to Iola. The other custom is cruising the old sports car race course around Lake Garnett in North Lake Park. The nearly 3-mile road circles the lake. The Lake Garnett sports-car races ran from 1959 to 1972 and were internationally famous. Racing karts will race around the lake each year. During their annual car show, the Lake Garnett Cruisers take a lap around the lake each year in honor of the races. The Sampler Foundation will pick 24 finalists for the 8 Wonders of Kansas Customs on Sept. 10.
