OTTAWA — Mayor Blake Jorgensen will lead a delegation of city and school officials and citizens to Topeka to represent all those Ottawans who helped Chapman. Gov. Mark Parkinson will present a Kansas Points of Light volunteer award to the community on Sept. 11 for helping Chapman after it was devastated by a tornado a year ago. Shortly after most of Chapman was destroyed by the tornado, Terry Heinsohn asked her fellow Ottawans to donate 500 books to the Chapman elementary school. Jorgensen said Ottawans and the Ottawa schools donated more than 5,000 books, school supplies and more than $1,400 to the Chapman school and students, as well as volunteer workers who helped with the cleanup. Jorgensen said he’s proud of the community’s response.
