OTTAWA — County commissioners decided Wednesday to buy a new Ford ambulance now instead of waiting a year as originally planned. Franklin County EMS director Nick Robbins said Ford plans to stop making diesel-powered ambulances and replace them with gasoline-powered ambulances. Robbins said that because ambulances often idle for long periods of times, gasoline engines tend to overheat and catch fire. Commissioner Sue Farrell said she’s checked with mechanics and they agree with Robbins’ bleak assessment. All of the county’s ambulances are Fords. Robbins said that next time, he may look at new diesel-powered ambulances offered by Chevrolet.
