GARNETT — Nearly two months after the end of his six-month suspension for an ethics violation, Anderson County Attorney Fred Campbell is still waiting to be reinstated. Campbell was the Anderson County attorney until he was suspended for his handling of an investigation into a May 2007 teen beer bash. During the party, two teens engaged in public sex which was recorded by cell phones and digital cameras by other party goers. After the party, the girl involved in the sex act told officials that she had been raped. After reviewing information and photos of the party, Campbell decided that no rape occurred. After obscuring the two teens’ identities, Campbell showed the photographs to parents of other teens at the party. Campbell told the Anderson County Review that his goal was to curb underage drinking. However, a state hearing panel and the Kansas Supreme Court disagreed, saying Campbell violated the girl’s privacy and his actions appeared intended to embarrass her. Although Campbell’s suspension ended in July and he’s requested one, the state hasn’t set a hearing on reinstating him.
