OTTAWA — The second farm accident in two weeks sent an elderly man to the KU Medical Center Monday morning following a tractor-related accident at his home west of Ottawa. Franklin County Extension agent Darren Hibdon said the accidents are a reminder of how dangerous farming can be and that those working around farm machinery need to be careful. The fall harvest is a time of heavy activity under time pressure and there’s a temptation to cut corners, he said. The harvest is a time when people are tired, machinery isn’t in the best of repair and there’s lots of mud and dirt; and chances for accidents increase, he said. Harvester need to take frequent breaks, eat healthy and get plenty of rest, he said. The elderly man was identified as Martin Scott. A KU Medical Center spokesman said Monday night the man’s condition wasn’t immediately available. Last week, 17-year-old West Franklin senior Evan Hamilton underwent surgery at Overland Park Regional Hospital after a farm accident near Pomona.
