LAWRENCE — A Lawrence coalition has started new protests against the proposed South Lawrence Trafficway. The Kansas Department of Transportation wants to extend K-10 east from U.S. 59 around southeast Lawrence to the Kansas Turnpike. Mike Caron, executive director of Save the Wakarusa Wetlands, told the Lawrence Journal-World that the protests are targeting the University of Kansas. The new road would go through the Baker Wetlands which is owned by KU and managed by Baker University for scientific research. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved the route through the Baker Wetlands but opponents filed a federal lawsuit against the proposals. That court case will be decided later.
