WAVERLY — A new sophisticated telephone scam is targeting area senior citizens. According to her son, an elderly Waverly woman received a phone call this morning. The caller told her he was her grandson and he was in a Canadian jail. He asked for $2,500 to bail him out of the jail. She called her son and the police. The son, who lives in Ottawa, said the calls continued and he heard one and he said the scammer is convincing. He added that the grandson was in school this morning finishing a high school chemistry test. The son said police told him that an Emporia woman lost $3,000 this week because of the scam. The son said he believes the scammers are using the Internet to collect information about the seniors.
