PAOLA — A group of sojourners will likely visit Paola this week as part of an effort to recall the first transcontinental highway. The Jefferson Highway, also called the Palms to Pines Road because it went from New Orleans to Winnipeg, Canada, follows Silver Street in Paola. The Jefferson Highway existed from 1919 to 1926, when the U.S. adopted its present numbering system for highways. The group is driving from Canada to New Orleans this month to talk about the Jefferson Highway’s history and had reached Kansas City this week. You can follow their trek through the Jefferson Highway Facebook web page.
