GARNETT — Garnett city residents will have more time to pay their utility bills in the event of a financial hardship. City manager Joyce Martin said city utility employees have asked to offer more extensions on local residents’ bills in extenuating circumstances.
Martin said that the utility billing staff thought that the tough economic times made it worth being more generous with the city’s extension policy. Previously, customers were only allowed to request three non-consecutive extensions to pay their utility bills. They had to pay the bills in the remaining nine months on time. Last week, city commissioners increased the number of extensions up to six per year. Martin said she’ll keep an eye on the new policy.
