OTTAWA — Ottawa school superintendent Dean Katt said the state’s schools not only need money from legislators, they need a fair chance to plan their budgets. School districts must budget for 18 months by August and make staffing decisions by April or May, he said. But in recent years because of legislative wrangling over funding for public education, school administrators often have little idea what state funding they’ll get when they start working on their budgets and make staffing plans, he said. It would be helpful for legislators to establish budgets over two to three years, so administrators would have more stability for their plans. School, city and county officials met with area legislators Tuesday night to discuss the upcoming legislative session and issues.
