PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State’s legendary football coach Chuck Broyles suddenly announced his retirement Wednesday. Broyles’s retirement announcement came after his arrest in Galena last week for DUI. In a press conference, Broyles and Pittsburg State president Steve Scott said he had planned to retire and the announcement and the arrest weren’t related. However, Scott also said Broyles has been placed on paid leave as athletic director and that the duties of AD and football coach would be separated into two positions. Scott named assistant coach Ken Beck as interim football coach and Russ Jewett as acting athletic director. Until this year, his first losing season as the Gorilla coach, Broyles had the best record in the history of NCAA Division II football and was the third winningest coach in college football.
