OTTAWA–The case of a man charged with second degree murder for shooting a young woman at a birthday party has gone to the jury. Closing arguments were presented Friday morning…Franklin County Attorney Heather Jones told jurors that defendant Mark Sherman had not intentionally shot 19 year old Sky Cadorette in the face July 10, but had shown extreme disregard for human life….an element required before finding a person guilty of second degree murder. Jones said Sherman planned his own birthday party at his Ottawa home, and became heavily intoxicated and mixed his drinking with Ritalin. Jones said the defendant had completely mishandled the weapon even when warned about it. Defense Attorney Frederick Meier told the jury that indeed the shooting was unintentional, but Sherman had not shown extreme disregard for life because he loved the victim…and the shooting was a terrible accident. Meier also questioned the truthfulness of several witnesses for the prosecution.
