OTTAWA — The Bea Martin Peck Animal Shelter said this week, you should bring in your outside pets because of howling cold temperatures. The animal shelter practices what it preaches. The shelter has been moving its dogs it keeps outside to “foster parents” with heated garages and barns, said Michelle Jackson. When temperatures reach zero, the temperatures can be a life-and-death situation for short-haired or small outdoor pets, she said. If you can’t bring in long-haired pets, provide them with small, sheltered houses packed with lots of straw and hay and hay and straw scattered outside, she said. Jackson said when temperatures get back into double-digits, you should make sure outside pets have plenty of hay or straw, food and water. The shelter’s outside dogs are also available for adoption, she added. Check petfinder.com.
