OTTAWA — The U.S. government and Americans are scrambling to help the more than 3 million Haitians affected by Tuesday’s destructive earthquake. The Haitian president says the death toll could reach hundreds of thousands. The Kansas East Conference of the United Methodist Church said many of its churches in the region will have a special offering this Sunday for Haiti. The Kansas City office of the Salvation Army says the organization is trying to move money and help to Salvation Army workers in Haiti. The American Red Cross said you can send money with your mobile phone. The Red Cross said you can text HAITI on your mobile phone and send it to 90999. The Red Cross will send a confirmation text. If you agree, $10 will be added to your phone bill for relief efforts in Haiti. However, the FBI said you should be careful before making a donation on-line. The FBI told ABC News it’s already received a handful of complaints about Web sites that could be fraudulent. Use a critical eye before handing over money or information, the agency said. Scam artists are known to send out spam and engineer so-called “phishing” attacks, pointing unsuspecting donors to malicious sites that look legitimate, the FBI said.
