TOPEKA — During his recent state of the state speech, Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson proposed some new tax increases as a way of balancing the budget. So far, new taxes are not attracting much support from lawmakers; however, one of the exceptions is state Rep. Tony Brown. He says there is a limit to cutting programs, including public education. The state has asked the state’s school children to take several budget hits and they have done their share in taking funding cuts, he said. Now it’s time for the legislature to consider enhanced revenues of some sort. Brown said it will take cooperation by both political parties to solve the massive budget deficit.
