TOPEKA — A House committee has killed a key part of Gov. Mark Parkinson’s plan to cover the state’s budget gap. The House Tax Committee, chaired by Richard Carlson, R-St. Mary, killed Parkinson’s proposal to temporarily raise the state sales tax by one cent to cover much of the expected $440 million budget deficit. Kansas Information Network reported that the move caught many at the Statehouse by surprise.
