TOPEKA — A Senate committee is castigating those school districts that are suing the state because of cutbacks in funding for public education. On a split vote, the committee sent a non-binding resolution last week to the Senate floor decrying school districts using tax dollars to sue another government entity to get more government money. However, the resolution may losing some of its bloom since it was found that House Speaker Mike O’Neal is suing the state on behalf of several business groups concerning workman’s comp funds that the state grabbed to help balance the state budget. O’Neal said his case is different. State Rep. Bill Feuerborn of Garnett is skeptical, saying it might not be illegal but it looks fishy and is probably unethical. O’Neal has been one of the loudest critics of the school districts’ lawsuit, Feuerborn added.
