OTTAWA — The Ottawa school board has trying to figure out its budget for next year. School superintendent Dean Katt says it’s been tricky. The Legislature has been slow in working on the budget, which makes budgeting for next year difficult, he said. If the state aid to public schools is unchanged from this year, Ottawa schools would have to cut another $680,000, he said. Katt said that according to what he’s been told, that is the most likely scenario, he said. He also called that the best-case scenario for next year. Despite the proposed cuts for next year, Katt said the alternatives could be much worse. Possible cuts could include changes to the school calendar, which may include four-day school weeks or longer days with shorter year, he said.
