GARNETT — Investigators have recovered all but one of the items stolen recently from Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett. Someone stole several items and vandalized the church, including damaging the church interior extensively and destroying religious statues outside. Father Brian Klingele told the Anderson County Review that services continued despite the vandalism inside. Although the thefts and vandalism were a shock, he said he doesn’t believe the thefts and vandalism were a hate crime. All stolen items except a cross have been recovered, he said. One irreplaceable item stolen and returned was a chalice given to Klingele by Pope Benedict. Investigators are pursuing several leads in the case.
