TOPEKA — Because of falling state revenues, Gov. Mark Parkinson announced a new round of cuts on Friday to cover a new $106 million state budget gap. Besides his newest round of cuts, he took time to blast legislators. Over the years, the legislators have continued to hand out a series of tax breaks that benefit wealthy taxpayers and special interest groups, which leaves the state without enough money to pay for schools, highways and other programs, he said. Among the largest cuts, Parkinson wants to cancel nearly all highway repair projects through next year and delay death and disability payments for the next three months. Some of the newest spending cuts will have to be approved by legislators, he said. He said he refuses to make any more cuts to public education.
