GARNETT — It’s Kansas severe weather awareness week but state climatologist Mary Knapp said tornadoes aren’t the only severe weather threat to prepare for. She told the Anderson County Review that lightning and floods kill more people than tornadoes. Hail and straight line winds are just as dangerous, she added. Anderson County has the Code Red reverse 911 system. That allows Anderson County dispatchers to call specific areas of the county to issue weather and other warnings. Those with landline phones are automatically enrolled. Those with cell phones need to sign up at the emergency management office or online at www.andersoncountyks.org. The service is free. A National Weather Service storm spotter training class will be Monday evening at 7 at the North Lake community building in Garnett.
