TOPEKA – Rep. Bill Otto said he supports a bill that makes state rules tougher on private cemetery companies. The House gave first-round approval to a bill that toughens the state’s oversight of pre-paid funeral and cemetery plans. Legislators took notice of two high-profile embezzlement cases involving private cemeteries at Topeka and Lawrence. Local governments and people who pre-pay for cemetery lots have been left holding the bag, causing a serious problem, Otto said.
