GARNETT — Because of the recent string of snow and rain storms, corn planting in Anderson County will likely be delayed for the second straight year. Anderson County Extension agent Shannon Blocker said farmers haven’t been able to get fertilizer down because it’s been so wet. National Weather Service forecaster Brian Barjenburch said farmers may get a break this week with windy and warm conditions. But that’s not likely to last long, he said. He said because of the winds this week, farmers should be careful about burning fields. The long-term climate outlook doesn’t look farm-friendly, he added. The forecast said temperatures over the next four months could be below normal and rainfall could be below normal. Anderson County farmers typically plant 30,000 acres of corn each year, mostly in late March or early April.
