TOPEKA — Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger says if you want flood insurance, you’re out of luck for the next few days. Technically, the National Flood Insurance Program expired last week. As a result, the federal program has stopped issuing new flood insurance or renewing policies, she said. However, homeowners with current policies are still be covered, she said. The most important problem is for those people trying to buy a house in a flood-prone area because lenders require flood insurance before they agree to mortgages. Congress will have to reauthorize the program when members return to session next week, she said.
