OTTAWA — The wooden statues of Tauy Jones and George Washburn on the courthouse lawn may find new homes. The sculptures were done out of old trees on the courthouse lawn by Oklahoma chainsaw artists Clayton Coss more than five years ago. County administrator Lisa Johnson told county commissioners Monday said the old tree roots are continuing to draw moisture up into the sculpture base, causing rotting. The sculptures themselves are still in good shape but need to be cut off the bases and moved, she said. She said she’ll check with the Franklin County Convention and Tourism Bureau or the Franklin County Historical Society to see if they want one or both statues. Commissioners replied they’d like to keep the statues at the courthouse but are willing to consider moving them.
