TOPEKA — A Topeka man has been sentenced to nearly 11 years in federal prison Monday after he mistakenly tried to rob a federal agent. U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said 35-year-old Phillip Tyrone Williams pleaded guilty to distributing crack cocaine, aggravated robbery of a federal agent, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. Welch said in March 2009, Williams and co-defendant Antoine Cardin Williams went to a Topeka motel to sell crack cocaine and a 38-caliber derringer. They did not know that the buyer was an undercover federal agent. The two men decided instead to rob the buyer and Antoine Williams pulled a gun on the agent, Welch said. Federal agents charged into the motel room. When Antoine Williams pointed the gun at another agent, the agent shot him. Antoine Williams was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison.
