LAWRENCE — Two Douglas County deputies will be honored for their daring rescue of a 14-year-old trapped in the Kansas River last summer. Cpl. Clark Rials and Deputy Dale Flory will receive the Silver Award from Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police May 21, in Hutchinson. The 14-year-old boy fell off the Bowersock Dam on the Kansas River in Lawrence and was trapped under a log by the force of the rushing water. Rials and Flory entered the rushing water several times trying to rescue the boy. Rials attached a rope to the log and rescuers moved the log and retrieved the boy from the river. Although the boy was unconscious, he was raced to the hospital, where he made a complete recovery. Sheriff Ken McGovern said he’s proud of his deputies and pleased they’ll be honored.
