GARNETT — Garnett city commissioners are looking at preliminary options for converting the former National Guard armory into a recreation center. City recreation director Josh Elliott said the centerpiece of the plan includes covering the armory’s concrete floor with a special plastic flooring that would be safer, last longer than wood and resist moisture. The new flooring would cost a little more than $30,000, he said. Elliott said there appears would plenty of demand for the armory as a recreation center.
That includes volleyball, youth basketball, indoor walking and a weight room, he said. The armory is large enough to accommodate the requests for recreation programs. The city recently received the armory from the state when the local Guard unit was merged with another unit as a cost-cutting measure.
