MELVERN–The Osage County Sheriff is investigating a case of animal neglect after seizing 13 starving horses from a pasture near Melvern. Sheriff Laurie Dunn took the horses after a local veterinarian determined they were malnourished. Two dead horses were also found in a nearby pasture. Doctor Teresa Tucker of Carbondale, the Veterinarian, said 8 horses were in various stages of starvation, and 4 were severely malnourished. She says the animals were basically just hides stretched over skeletons. The animals are now being cared for at an undisclosed location. No criminal charges have yet been filed.
