TOPEKA — After a long weekend session, legislators were trying to come up with a new budget that includes a sales tax increase. According to a deal worked out between moderate Republicans and Democrats, the budget would include a one-cent increase in the state’s sales tax. Kansas Information Network’s Jeff Zehnder reported that conservatives were fiercely opposed. According to reports this afternoon, a coalition of conservatives and Johnson County legislators in the Kansas House had stalled the plan. Legislators returned to Topeka today after failing to wrap up the budget in a marathon weekend session.
