WICHITA — At a time when millions of students are thinking about their high school graduation ceremonies, Wichita State education professor Terry Behrendt is thinking about those students who drop out. More than a million students who enter ninth grade each fall fail to graduate with their peers four years later, he said. Studies show that they have no future. Fifty percent of dropouts are unemployed and 80 percent of the people who are behind bars are dropouts, he said. They have more trouble in their marriages, rarely own their own homes and less likely to contribute to their communities.
