DETROIT — For Kansas University engineering students, a checkered flag and a big trophy will be their passing grade. The students spent the school year designing, building and testing a Formula-style race car from the wheels up. This week they’re in Detroit racing it at the nation’s Formula competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Two Baldwin High School graduates are on the KU engineering team; Sam Pippert and Cameron Bryant, both of Baldwin City. As part of the competition, teams must explain how they designed the car and why it’s better than the others. They’ll make a mock sales presentation, and figure out the costs to mass-produce their cars. The cars will also be in four separate races involving acceleration, handling and fuel economy.
