APPANOOSE — It was a real blast for Appanoose Elementary School students Tuesday afternoon as they hosted a ribbon-cutting event for their new wind turbine. The school got the turbine through the Kansas Wind Energy for Schools program. Principal Cathy Brandt said the turbine will help propel the science and careers curriculum. She said she and other staff members at Appanoose are excited about the new opportunities the program will bring to the school. KCP&L’S Chuck Cason said although the utility has been using coal-fired power plants, wind power representing an important and growing part of the energy production in Kansas. The Appanoose project was funded by grants and donations from KCP&L, Kansas State University, Performance Electric, The Energy Savings Store. It’s the second small wind generator in the Appanoose area and those attending the ribbon-cutting say they hope to see more wind turbines in the area in the future.
