GARNETT — May was the third coolest May on record. The Anderson County Review reports that despite the warmer temperatures of the Memorial Day holiday, May was unseasonably cool. State climatologist Mary Knapp told the Anderson County Review that the cooler temperatures are a lingering effect of El Nino in the Pacific Ocean. In Kansas, El Nino tends to cause a wet winter and fall, she said. The El Nino pattern is weakening and should disappear by mid-summer, she said. Anderson County Extension ag agent Shannon Blocker said she’s concerned about the cool temperatures and the effect on the county’s corn crop. Because the cool temperatures are slowing the corn crop’s maturity cycle, Blocker said she’s afraid that corn may be at the point of filling out ears when the weather turns hot and dry.
