OTTAWA — Summer school returns to Ottawa. Although there was summer school and credit recovering for high school students at the Ottawa Learning Center, summer school for elementary and middle school students had been dropped as part of an effort to cut costs because of cutbacks in state school funding. School Supt. Dean Katt said that after a hiatus of a year, there will be summer school for elementary students at Eisenhower School and for middle school students at the Ottawa Middle School. Because the district still faces a budget crunch, the hours and days will be shorter, but Katt said the board believed the summer schools for younger students is still critical. Summer schools will be July 26-Aug. 13. Having the elementary summer school later will help children remember more when regular school begins, he said.
