WASHINGTON — The Maytag repairman won’t be lonely now — the company is recalling 1.7 million dishwashers due to a fire hazard. ABC Radio reports that the dishwashers can catch fire because of an electrical problem with the heating element. There have been 12 reports of fires, including one that caused major damage to the kitchen. Maytag and the Consumer Product Safety Commission said the dishwashers were sold from February 2006 though April of this year. That includes not just the Maytag brand, it includes Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral and Magic Chef, Performa and Crosley. If you think you may have one of the dishwashers, stop using it. Consumer Product Safety Commission Consumers said you should call Maytag at (800) 544-5513 anytime, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.repair.maytag.com. If the dishwasher is included in the recall, you can either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. Don’t return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where you bought it.
