GARNETT — A piece of Garnett history will give extra appeal to the Anderson County Museum. The 125-year-old half-ton bell was carefully removed recently from the former Garnett Presbyterian Church bell tower and taken to the museum. Former church pastor George Pasley told the Anderson County Review that the bell was an important part of Garnett’s history. The bell rang for church services and whenever a church member died, he said. It also rang for events of national significance including the 9-11 terrorist attacks and when Presbyterian missionary Ben Weir was released after being held hostage 16 months in Lebanon, he said. Ringing the bell was a highlight for many Garnett kids, he said. The church held its last service in October 2007 and its assets given to various community organizations. The church building was sold to the Chamber Players Community Theater.
