MANHATTAN — State climatologist Mary Knapp might consider today as a “national tornado day,” but she said lightning is a bigger threat. On average, floods and lightning kill more people than tornadoes each year. If you can hear thunder, you’re at risk for being hit by lightning – and sometimes, you could be hit by lightning without hearing any thunder, she said. Lightning can strike the ground 10 to 12 miles from a thunderstorm, she said. Be especially careful when being on or near bodies of water, she said.
