MANHATTAN — Although soybeans usually fertilize themselves. Kansas State University soil scientist Dave Mengel said there have been some cases where soybeans show nitrogen deficiency, especially in fields that have been newly-planted to beans, or because the inoculants failed to work. Plants can look pale yellow and sickly. Mengel said it’s easy to rectify. Farmers can either broadcast dry urea over the beans or inject a 28-percent nitrogen solution into the soil.
